THIS MORNING the Venice FIlm Festival was all abuzz as Saudi Arabian filmmaker Haifaa Al Mansour shared details of what it’s like to be the first female director of a Saudi film, "Wadjda," which is also the first-ever feature s
hot entirely inside the Kingdom.
Al Mansour spoke of having to direct by telephone as Saudi law does not allow women and men to be seen together outside. "Wadjda" is the tale of a 12-year old tomboy, Wadjda, who wants to buy a bike. However, the real story is its Riyadh setting and unapologetic feminist intent throwing open closed doors on women’s lives.
"Wadjda" makes its American debut at the 2012 Telluride Film Festival.
